Press Room: DeINCEPTION

For journalists, reviewers, podcasters, educators, and media contacts covering the film.

DeINCEPTION: The Great Aha! What Is Happiness? is a philosophical documentary about the false maps of happiness that shape modern life.

It asks whether the happiness we were taught to pursue is true enough to live by.

What if the happiness we inherited is not true enough to live by?

A cinematic image of modern restlessness and the question of happiness

Why the Question Matters Now

Most people are already pursuing happiness. The question is whether they understand what they are pursuing.

DeINCEPTION takes an old question seriously at a time when many people seem least able to answer it:

What is happiness?

We live with more comfort, choice, stimulation, and opportunity than almost any generation before us. Yet many people remain restless, distracted, anxious, exhausted, or inwardly unsatisfied.

The film does not treat happiness as a passing mood or lifestyle preference. It asks whether modern culture has handed people a reduced map of happiness: happiness as pleasure, comfort, success, self-expression, escape, or private satisfaction.

Ways to Cover the Film

DeINCEPTION can be approached through several editorial, interview, podcast, review, and feature angles.

Angle 01

The Happiness We Were Sold

What if the modern definition of happiness is too shallow to live by?

The film examines the gap between the happiness people are taught to chase and the deeper question of what actually makes a human life whole.

Angle 02

The Map of Happiness

Every person lives by some idea of happiness.

The film explores how inherited maps of happiness shape what people chase, fear, envy, excuse, sacrifice, and call success.

Angle 03

Forty Days in the Wilderness

John Angheli’s 40-day solitary ordeal in the Tasmanian wilderness gives the film a physical and personal path into the question.

The wilderness removes comfort, routine, performance, and distraction.

Angle 04

Why Comfort Has Not Made Us Whole

DeINCEPTION does not reduce modern unhappiness to one cause.

It asks whether beneath distraction, disconnection, anxiety, and restlessness there may be a deeper cultural confusion about what happiness is.

Angle 05

Feeling Good and Becoming Good

The film explores the difference between hedonic happiness and eudaimonic happiness; between pleasure and virtue; between feeling good and becoming good.

Angle 06

Education, Formation, and the Young

What idea of happiness are schools, families, institutions, and communities passing on?

The film raises questions relevant to education, youth formation, identity, motivation, and the kind of life young people are being prepared to pursue.

One-Sentence Synopsis

Short Logline

DeINCEPTION: The Great Aha! What Is Happiness? is a philosophical documentary about one man’s search to remove a false idea of happiness and discover what kind of life is truly worth living.

Short Synopsis

The film in brief

DeINCEPTION follows filmmaker and motivation researcher John Angheli through a near-fatal accident, a 40-day wilderness ordeal in Tasmania, and a philosophical search for the idea beneath human desire, ambition, suffering, and the good life.

The film asks whether modern culture has planted a reduced idea of happiness in the human imagination: happiness as pleasure, comfort, success, self-expression, escape, or private satisfaction.

Its central question is simple but demanding: What is happiness?

Extended Synopsis

DeINCEPTION: The Great Aha! What Is Happiness? is a philosophical documentary by John Angheli about the hidden maps of happiness that shape modern life.

The film begins with a personal reckoning. After a near-fatal car accident, John is forced to confront the question ordinary life often conceals: if this had been the end, would he have been happy with the life he lived?

That question leads him into a 40-day and 40-night solitary ordeal in the Tasmanian wilderness. Removed from comfort, routine, entertainment, public role, and ordinary escape, happiness ceases to be an abstract idea. It becomes a test.

From there, DeINCEPTION expands into a wider inquiry. What if modern unhappiness is not simply the result of failed habits, difficult circumstances, or emotional imbalance? What if many people are suffering because the map of happiness they inherited does not match the territory of a human life?

The film explores happiness not merely as a feeling, but as a question of truth, desire, virtue, meaning, freedom, responsibility, and alignment with reality. It asks what would have to change if happiness were not what we thought it was.

Exit the Dream.
